Opening times

Generally the National Park Hohe Tauern is accessible free of charge – it is compulsory to keep on the paths and dogs on lead. The National Park is accessible from many side valleys of the Pinzgau, Pongau and Lungau (Salzburg region), of the Isel valley and the valley bottom of Lienz (East Tyrol), of the Möll valley and the Malta area (Carinthia). At the starting points there are usually visitor parking areas with informative boards.

Visitors can also get very detailed information in the National Park municipalities at the local tourism bureaus or at the single National Park Infopoints.

Often also forest roads lead into the National Park valleys: they are accessible to the public but not free  drivable – in any case here you have an excellent network of transfer services.

A very special experience is the discovering of the park accompanied by a National Park ranger. In summer (from July to September) a wide range of guided tours and trekking tours lasting from half-day up to several days are offered regularly. In the winter season (from the middle of December to Easter) you can enjoy the national park with the rangers on wonderful snow-shoe hikes.

Also for groups a ranger can separately be booked for a tour, which can be organized according to your need wholly individually (early booking is required!).

In spring/summer and in autumn all roads are free drivable. Because of the high alpine altitude, on the higher roads there may occasionally be short closings because of the weather conditions (landslides, rock falls etc.)

In the winter months some roads may be closed according to the snow situation, that is why there is snow-chains are compulsory. Please get informed on this regard asking your lodging keeper or at the local tourism bureaus.

The Grossglockner High alpine road is closed from the end of October – according to when winter conditions start – to the beginning/middle of May. Please check our up-to-date information at our homepage-

All (high) Alpine huts are generally open in the summer months (from middle of June to the end of September), anyways the opening times may vary. Please get information at the local tourism offices.  According to the weather and altitude conditions single alpine inns are already open starting from beginning of May. In the winter months the high alpine huts are closed. Anyways, some of them are open from the end of February to the end of April for ski touring hikers.
